For owners - What to expect during a treatment
Prior to all initial consultations Shona will receive a full medical history from your primary veterinary surgeon. Shona will also take a current history and perform a full physical examination during your pet’s first appointment.
Initial consultations last 45-60 minutes and subsequent consultations last approximately 30 minutes. Shona enjoys the time this gives her to spend with her patients and evaluate their needs. It can take more than one treatment for an effect to be seen and thus it is recommended that your pet receive weekly acupuncture for 4-6 weeks. Following this treatment intervals are increased according to individual needs to form a unique treatment plan that will maintain therapeutic benefits. A small percentage of animals (and humans) do not respond to acupuncture.
During a treatment needles are inserted in specific positions and left in place for up to 20 minutes. It is common for patients to become relaxed and sleepy, which allows a chance for them to rest. Other effects that may be seen include panting and a nasal drip.
Following a treatment your pet may become more uncomfortable for up to 48 hours. This is nothing to be concerned about and the best course of action is to allow them to rest. Patients on maintenance treatments may similarly begin to show signs of discomfort a few days before their acupuncture is due.
Improvements often noted following acupuncture range from a general lift in demeanour to improvements in mobility and posture.
